Since their inception, cryptocurrency and blockchain have gradually been recognized as an irreversible advancement disrupting established industries. Up till now, the industry has shown impressive growth and potential for attracting investment. As in other high-tech sectors, gender inequality is also a concern in this industry with the proportion of women participating and investing in blockchain or cryptocurrency much lower than that of men.
According to Coin.dance, as of May 2018, 94.73 % of Bitcoin community engagement and active participation comes from men and 5.27% from women.
In Oct. 2017, loveYouEth, a Reddit user, conducted a survey showing that 96% of Ether users are men, and MyEtherWallet reported that 84% of their wallet holders were male..
It is possible that the features of cryptocurrencies and differing levels of risk adversity biologically assigned to men and women is the resason for gender disparity in blockchain and cryptocurrency investment and involvement.
Gender disparity is believed to place a significant impact on the potential growth of the field. Thus, as soon as the issue is solved, the industry may see a better future with a diversity of perspectives and contribution.
As the industry continues to grow, more and more job opportunities are created and the demands for such blockchain-related employees as digital developers, project managers, web designers, and blockchain engineers,… have become higher than ever. However, it is still a challenge for women to fill in these vacancies due to the glass ceiling built within the industry in terms of genders, knowledge, social status and so forth.
In recognition of the importance of gender bias in the field, Blockchain Angels, one of the pioneering cryptocurency and blockchain organizations for women, will hold a specialised seminar for women in Vietnam. The seminar promises to provide knowledge and first-hand experience about this high-tech field to participants in the most professional and effective way.
The seminar is the first step on combating gender barriers in blockchain and cryptocurrency space in Vietnam, with a set goal to reach 50/50 by 2020. With the participation of leading industry experts, the convention will help beginners, especially women obtain better working opportunities as well as business opportunities in the field. Furthermore, Blockchain Angels also aims at raising the bar of blockchain events in Vietnam and seeding more diverse visionaries for the decentralization vision.
